Outreach to Berkeley High School Students

From your Outreach Co’s Justine Katindoy & Derek Anthony Yip:

Hey all!

Fall quarter is winding down, and we hope everyone is getting on that academic grind! As your FSA Outreach co’s, we just wanted to send out a last e-mail to you all saying thank you for your interest in outreach this quarter. A special thanks to folks who responded to our opportunities to get involved. We’ll be coming even stronger next year, so keep a look out for outreach in the Winter! We have a lot of ideas for bigger outreach opportunities for the community which means we’ll be putting together an outreach team to help brainstorm and plan our future events, as well as volunteer throughout the entire year. If you are interested in becoming a part of this team, let us know and we will give you more info on when our first meeting will be!

Here’s one last opportunity for y’all coming from Engaging Education.

On this Thursday, December 6, 2007, about 50 students from a small school within
Berkeley High School will be touring our campus. We are hosting a
student panel for the students at 10:30 in the Redwood Lounge, and we
would like 7-8 students to express their academic and social
experiences here at UCSC, as well as answer questions that the students
may have. Although, we only need 7-8 students to be on the panel, we
still want you all to come and show these students that there are
people of color on our campus!

We would like all volunteers to meet at 10:15 in the Redwood Lounge to
prepare for the panel. The student panel would end around 11:45 and we
will walk the students up to the Crown/Merrill dining hall in small
groups. The main 7-8 people on the panel will be able to eat at the
dining hall as well as stay with their group and answer any extra
questions they may have. Please email us as at programming@engagingeducation.org
as soon as possible if you are interested in getting involved!
All are welcome!

Happy holidays everyone, and study hard for finals!

Get Involved with Engaging Education

HEY EVERYONE! It’s Justine, one of your Program Coordinators at Engaging Education!

Sooooo for anyone who is interested in getting involved here at e2, here’s your chance! As Program Coordinator, I’m in charge of putting together our Programming Committee, which consists of student volunteers who would like to help in planning events, doing high school outreach, and contributing input on what kind of future events you’d like to see e2 have.

Our first meeting will be on Monday, November 5th at 1:00pm at the e2 Center conference room (the room in the back of our center where the food was held at during our open house!). We will be going over our first task— Balboa High School Outreach! The “School to College” program has requested that we conduct a day of tours and a student panel to answer questions for 40 10th-12th grade college-bound students from Balboa High School in San Francisco on Thursday, November 15th.

This is where you come in! We need a committee to plan our campus tours and student panel. This is a great opportunity to share your knowledge with these students of what college is like and why higher education is so important to our youth. So come to the meeting! If you are interested in attending, please try and e-mail back so I can make sure our conference room will accomodate everyone coming or if we need a bigger space.

November 5th, 2007 @ 1:00pm! Spread the word to your communities, all are welcome!

See you there!

Outreach Opportunity

From Outreach Co’s Derek Yip & Justine Katindoy:

Hey guys,

D.Yip here,

If you’re looking for any volunteer opportunities here’s a great one for the Holidays:

Glide Memorial in San Francisco always has volunteer opportunities but their Holiday opportunities are some of their biggest days. Volunteer tasks include things such as preparing food ( i.e. chopping vegetables, carving meat etc.), serving food, busing tables etc. Shifts start as early as 6AM and continue throughout the day. To sign up, all you have to do is go to http://glide.org.

If you guys don’t want to go alone, my family and I always go for the earliest shift at 6AM on Thanksgiving. That way you’ll be done for family festivities by 8-9AM. So, if that’s the case email me dyip@ucsc.edu or outreach.fsa@gmail.com and we can make arrangements meet up before hand and go together or something like that.

If you were wondering, yes Glide Memorial is the church where Will Smith and his son stayed at in Pursuit of Happyness.

I hope to see you guys there, or hear that you participated. Also, keep a look out for more outreach events throughout the year.
