ASFCME Picket

Brothers and Sisters,

This is a reminder for the statewide AFSCME picket happening tomorrow,
Thursday, Dec 6th.

Statewide Picket for AFSCME’s Contract Fight
Thursday (Tomorrow) Dec 6th
3pm – 5pm
UCSC Bay Tree Bookstore

Due to low wages and increasing healthcare and parking costs, many
campus workers have to work 2-3 jobs just to support their families.
As a result, they suffer from physical strain, time away from young
children and barriers from sending their own kids to UC. Meanwhile,
this negatively impacts the entire campus community and economy. We
say enough!

Workers are demanding to be treated like other comparable university
and hospital workers, including provisions for market rate wages,
longevity salary steps and healthcare and pension protections. At the
bargaining table UC management is saying they want to keep campus
service and patient care workers below these standards. So it’s time
to put the pressure on.

Please join in force tomorrow from 3-5pm – RAIN OR SHINE!!!

in unity,

FULL EQUITY NOW!

Come learn more information at B.O.S.E.S (flyer on webpage).

It’s the final push for full equity for the Filipino veterans of World War II. They STILL haven’t received the full benefits for fighting for the U.S. in World War II. We’ve been rallying for the past 10 years, and NOW is the time to show that you support HR 760 and S 57 by sending letters and calling your representatives. If these bills don’t get passed, no more efforts will be made to fight for veterano equity because the politicians who have supported this cause will be leaving office. Please realize that this is not just a Filipino issue — we need support from EVERYONE to make a difference!

Justice for Custodio Family, Victims of Police Brutality

A message from FSA member Eric Tandoc:

Hi everybody,

I want to invite all y’all to an important Filipino community event in San Jose on Saturday (10/27).

It’s a cultural benefit fundraiser for the Custodio family, who were victims of police brutality a few months ago by the San Jose Police.

The youngest son, Marlo Custodio (18), was eating food in his parked car when a police officer came and started harassing him. The officer then pulled him out of the car and slammed his face on the hood. He called his mom and when she arrived the police started roughing her up too. After that, they were both charged with resisting arrest.

The case has really brought a lot of stress and anguish to the family and we’ve been doing our best to support them as a community and call for these false charges to be dropped. Throughout the past months, a lot of youth and community members from San Jose have come out and shown their support, especially when they have court hearings and other events.

It would mean a lot to them for FSA and students from Santa Cruz to come and support them. It would also be a good way to meet the family and folks from the San Jose Filipino community and start making contacts with them for future community work. =)

The event is hosted by FOCUS (Filipino Community Support), which is heading up the Justice for Custodio (JFC) campaign. It should be a dope event, with hip-hop and spoken word performances, cause it’s also highlighting Filipino American History Month, which is October.

Alright then, hope y’all can come through! Just let me know if you’d like to support.. =)

Peace,
Eric
