High School Outreach Opportunities

Hello lovely community! Here are a couple outreach opportunities for you to get involved with from Engaging Education. Please pass this message onto anyone you may know who is interested.

HIGH SCHOOL OUTREACH OPPORTUNITIES (WINTER QUARTER):

Monday February 4th, 2008
50 students from O’Connell High School in San Francisco are coming up to UCSC, and we at e^2 are hosting a student panel and campus tour for them. There will be 50% juniors, and 50% seniors, and a majority of the students are students of color. They really just want to be able to talk to UCSC students who know what it was like transitioning from high school to an university, what our fears were coming into college, how to balance an academic/social life, and the dynamics of being a student of color on this campus and in higher education in general.

10am-12pm: Student panel/activities at C9/10 community room
12pm-1pm: Lunch
1pm-2:30pm: Campus tour

Friday February 29th, 2008:
30 students from Gavilan college Puente program students will visit our campus. These students are all working to meet the requirements to transfer to a four year university. They are inviting e^2 to participate in this event. These underrepresented students have requested information from the Biological sciences, Engineering, Humanities and social sciences. They would like to have UCSC students, (especially other transfer students but anyone is welcome) who have majors in those departments come and share their experiences, as well as offer any guidance and advice on what to expect when transferring to this university (socially and academically).

10am-12pm: Student panel/activities (Location TBA)
12pm-1pm: Lunch
1pm-2:30pm: Campus tour

You may volunteer for either day and for whatever times work for you. You may volunteer for the campus tour, student panel, or BOTH if you want! All help is appreciated. We just want to really give these students some genuine and helpful insight into what it is like at this university, as well as offer them the guidance they will need to succeed once they go to college. They deserve to see other people of color like themselves succeeding in higher education! So if you are interested in volunteering, feel free to e-mail PROGRAMMING@ENGAGINGEDUCATION.ORG to get more information. Say which day you can make it to, and what times you will be available. e^2 would love to see you get involved!

Thank you.

Peace, Love, and Outreach.

Outreach Coordinators

Get Involved with Engaging Education

HEY EVERYONE! It’s Justine, one of your Program Coordinators at Engaging Education!

Sooooo for anyone who is interested in getting involved here at e2, here’s your chance! As Program Coordinator, I’m in charge of putting together our Programming Committee, which consists of student volunteers who would like to help in planning events, doing high school outreach, and contributing input on what kind of future events you’d like to see e2 have.

Our first meeting will be on Monday, November 5th at 1:00pm at the e2 Center conference room (the room in the back of our center where the food was held at during our open house!). We will be going over our first task— Balboa High School Outreach! The “School to College” program has requested that we conduct a day of tours and a student panel to answer questions for 40 10th-12th grade college-bound students from Balboa High School in San Francisco on Thursday, November 15th.

This is where you come in! We need a committee to plan our campus tours and student panel. This is a great opportunity to share your knowledge with these students of what college is like and why higher education is so important to our youth. So come to the meeting! If you are interested in attending, please try and e-mail back so I can make sure our conference room will accomodate everyone coming or if we need a bigger space.

November 5th, 2007 @ 1:00pm! Spread the word to your communities, all are welcome!

See you there!

Outreach Opportunity

From Outreach Co’s Derek Yip & Justine Katindoy:

Hey guys,

D.Yip here,

If you’re looking for any volunteer opportunities here’s a great one for the Holidays:

Glide Memorial in San Francisco always has volunteer opportunities but their Holiday opportunities are some of their biggest days. Volunteer tasks include things such as preparing food ( i.e. chopping vegetables, carving meat etc.), serving food, busing tables etc. Shifts start as early as 6AM and continue throughout the day. To sign up, all you have to do is go to http://glide.org.

If you guys don’t want to go alone, my family and I always go for the earliest shift at 6AM on Thanksgiving. That way you’ll be done for family festivities by 8-9AM. So, if that’s the case email me dyip@ucsc.edu or outreach.fsa@gmail.com and we can make arrangements meet up before hand and go together or something like that.

If you were wondering, yes Glide Memorial is the church where Will Smith and his son stayed at in Pursuit of Happyness.

I hope to see you guys there, or hear that you participated. Also, keep a look out for more outreach events throughout the year.
